What Are Traffic Exchanges?

A traffic exchange is a website that typically offers various services centered around generating traffic through advertising. The high volume of traffic attracts marketers, this is both good and bad. With exchanges being saturated with marketers, means that everyone there is doing the exact same thing as you, surfing websites in order to get their websites seen. This, and the fact that your promotional material will only get anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds of exposure makes TE's less than ideal for getting conversions and sales.

However, traffic exchanges can be a great place to build a list, which can lead to profits through a downline builder or an eventual sale.

Traffic exchange programs are a  great way to:

1. Get your product and or service in front of a potentially unlimited and diverse audience. 
2. Seeing what and how other marketers are promoting. 
3. Branding.
4. Lead generation/list building. 
5. Building a profitable downline.

Traffic exchanges are not the place to post your 2,500 word sales page. You just don't have the time needed to be an effective sales option.

Traffic exchanges are best suited for using a splash page designed for list building.


Surfing For Credits

Once you have joined a traffic exchange you'll be able to surf websites that other members have placed in rotation. You'll be required to stay on the site for a specified amount of time ( 10 - 30 secs ) then you'll be rewarded credits. You can  exchange those credits to get your websites, programs viewed.

Types Of Traffic Exchanges 

There are two types of traffic exchanges auto and manual. Both will give you hits to your sites and have value.

Auto Traffic Exchanges
Auto Exchanges, will give your sites hits or visits and search engines love this. However, being an automated system there's no possibility for lead generation. And can actually do more harm than good for S.E.O (search engine optimization) if not used in moderation.

Manual Traffic Exchanges
Manuel Exchanges, require human verification. This ensures that your website is seen by an actual person and the potential for lead generation.

Using a tabbed browser
Using a tabbed browser gives you the ability to open multiple exchanges at the same time. I typically will have five exchanges going at once.

The ability of multi - tabbed browsers to save your bookmarks in a group format will make things a lot easier to manage. By opening multiple websites and using favorites or groups option in the tool bar you can easily create a new folder to store your exchange URLS. When your promoting 10 affiliate products, managing a blog and or website and working traffic exchanges, being organized is crucial to not only your success, but your sanity.

Referring Others
Another very effective way to earn credits is to refer other marketers or publishers to the traffic exchanges you are a member of. You can do this by sending people to a referral URL, which you can find in the member's area of any traffic exchange.

A referral URL is a link to the traffic exchange home page that includes your personal id code. When someone visits your referral URL, then signs up with the traffic exchange, they are placed in "your downline".

It's important to note that most traffic exchanges provide a "downline builder". This is only "yours" in the sense that your going to be doing all the work to build it through recruiting.

The traffic exchanges downline builder is actually the websites admins. So, by using a sites downline builder, you are now a part of the admins downline and so is anyone that signs up under you.

I don't have an issue with this particular part. It's just business, and helps keep the money flowing for all of us, but.....

Recruiting referrals is harder now than ever.With identity theft and other scams flooding the internet people just aren't willing to give out their personal information anymore.

My problem is with traffic exchanges ( or any referral program ) that only want to pay $0.01 per referral. A new trend being adopted  by some sites is not adding your referrals to your downline period, unless your an upgraded member.

Meaning, your referrals will be a part of the admins downline not yours. So, the sites admin will benefit from your referrals financially, not you.

What they are forgetting, or perhaps dismissing, is that their business depends on you and me for revenue.

We only use their services because it's mutually beneficial for both parties. When it's no longer advantageous it will no longer be needed.

If I'm going to run a campaign and my goal is to recruit 100 new members, it's not going to be for 100 pennies, and it certainly will not be for free.

Make sure the compensation is equal to the work performed.

You can also purchase traffic, banner, and text link credits from most traffic exchanges. This is quite useful if you don't have a lot of time to surf, or if you just want to add some extra "punch" to your efforts.

Most credit packages are quite reasonably priced, so your advertising dollars will go a long way.

Winning Credits
The majority of traffic exchanges now support random credit winnings during member surf sessions. In fact, with many programs, you are guaranteed at least a small winning at regular surfing intervals.

Surfing contests, referral contests, and random drawings are other examples of how traffic exchange users can win free traffic credits.

Additional Ways to Earn Credits
Many traffic exchanges provide their members with alternative methods of credit generation. For instance, an exchange might award credits for reading solo email ads, these are called safelist mailers.

Some programs also have a "search for credits" feature. There are even a few programs that allow members to earn credits for displaying their referral URL.
